There will also be a panel with the director of the short film, Brendan Byrne, and people who appear in it, Manuel Rodriguez and Anna Lucia Lopez from the organizations Rio Arriba and Out of the Boat. The panel will be moderated by Paul Ganster, San Diego State University scholar and expert on binational issues.

Thursday, October 8th, 2020. 12:30 PM Reimagining the Tijuana River

We will also have the presentation of the talk “Reimagining the Tijuana River” by Tijuana’s Antonieta Peregrina and Sergio Soto; they will present examples of different rivers around the world where the participation of citizens was fundamental to achieve their regeneration. In the talk, Antonieta and Sergio propose a model of participation whereby Tijuana residents can lead the Tijuana River rescue efforts so that it may become a source of pride for this great city. Finally, civil society groups from both sides of the border will present the ideas of residents focused on ensuring that the Tijuana River becomes a true icon of this great Tijuana-San Diego region.

Hernando Durán Cabrera es originario de Tijuana, B.C. Cursó la carrera de Ingeniero Industrial y de Sistemas en el Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), título obtenido con mención honorífica. Fue Director General de la Comisión Estatal de Servicios Públicos de Tijuana (CESPT) del 2007 al 2013, organismo operador del agua con más de 2000 empleados y 600,000 usuarios. Dentro del sector público, ha sido Secretario Particular del Gobernador Ernesto Ruffo Appel. También fue Secretario Particular del Alcalde de Tijuana Guadalupe Osuna Millán así como Director de Comunicación Social del XV Ayuntamiento de Tijuana. Su experiencia en el ámbito privado ha sido como Director de Planta de la empresa Industrial Castor S.A., así como consultor especialista en factibilidad de proyectos de inversión en la empresa Consultoría de Baja California. Actualmente se desempeña como catedrático en la Dirección de Ingeniería de la Universidad Iberoamericana de Tijuana. Además es Director de Tijuana Verde de Tijuana Innovadora.
Hernando Durán Cabrera is a native of Tijuana, B.C. Hernando Durán studied Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), where he graduated with honors. He served as general director of the State Public Services Commission of Tijuana (by its Spanish initials, CESPT) from 2007 to 2013, a water utility with more than 2000 employees and 600,000 users. Within the public sector, he served as private secretary to Baja California Governor, Ernesto Ruffo Appel. He also served as Private Secretary to Tijuana Mayor, Guadalupe Osuna Millán, as well as Director of Social Communication within Tijuana’s 15th Municipal Government. His private sector experience includes serving as Plant Director of Industrial Castor S.A., and he has also worked as a consultant for the firm Consultoría de Baja California, specializing in the feasibility of investment projects. He is currently a professor in the Engineering Department of the Universidad Iberoamericana in Tijuana and also serves as director of Tijuana Verde within the Tijuana Innovadora organization.

Sergio Soto

Nacido en la ciudad de Tijuana, es arquitecto por el Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey y cuenta con un master en Desarrollo Urbano y Territorial para ciudades de países en desarrollo, por la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, en Barcelona, España. Su práctica profesional e interés personal se han centrado en el ámbito del urbanismo, la planeación urbana, el diseño urbano y la arquitectura de paisaje, desarrollando iniciativas y proyectos que a través del diseño permitan transformar la experiencia de las personas en las ciudades en las que habitan.
Born in the city of Tijuana, Sergio Soto has a degree in Architecture from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, or by its Spanish initials, ITESM) and a Master's degree in Urban and Territorial Development for Cities in Developing Countries from the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña (Polytechnic University of Catalonia) in Barcelona, Spain. His professional practice and personal interest have focused on the field of urbanism, urban planning, urban design and landscape architecture, developing initiatives and projects that, through design, can transform the experience of people in the cities in which they live.

Antonieta Peregrina

Environmental Activist, Master in Urban Planning, Sustainability and Climate Change
Maestra en Planificación Urbana Sostenibilidad y Cambio Climático por la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña en Barcelona. Activista ambiental con maś de 15 años de experiencia en impulsar movimientos ciudadanos encaminados a la sustentabilidad. Fundraiser, gestora y productora de propuestas culturales y educativas como herramienta de resiliencia. Ha sido funcionaria pública a nivel estatal, ha participado en estrategias regionales, incidencia en políticas públicas y cabildeo legislativo sobre temas ambientales. Forma parte de la Red Mexicana de Cuencas, de la red nacional de Ríos Limpios, de la Alianza de México sin plástico, red de ecoaldeas de América Latina y del colectivo de organizaciones Educación Ambiental Mundial.
Antonieta Peregrina holds a Master's degree in Urban Planning Sustainability and Climate Change from the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña (Polytechnic University of Catalonia) in Barcelona. She is an environmental activist with over 15 years of experience in promoting citizens' movements focused on sustainability; fundraiser, manager and producer of cultural and educational proposals as a tool for resilience. She has been a civil servant at the state level, and has participated in the development of regional strategies, public policy advocacy and legislative lobbying on environmental issues. She is part of the Red Mexicana de Cuencas (Mexican Network of Basins), the national Ríos Limpios (Clean Rivers) network, the México sin Plástico (Mexico without plastic) alliance, the Latin American network of ecovillages and the World Environmental Education collective of organizations.

Thursday, October 8th, 2020. 1:00 PM TI MOVEMENT: 10 Years of Binational Culture - 5th Annual Environmental Fair

Presentation of the finalists and winning projects of the 5th Academic Environmental Fair organized by Tijuana Verde of Tijuana Innovadora with the participations of more than 10 educational institutions and over 30 projects proposed by young students from the region, all designed to benefit the city’s environment.

The program will include a review of Tijuana Verde’s activities over the last 10 years and will end with a series of videos made by some of our allies in which they will present some of their efforts to promote a Green Tijuana.
